Black Giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper), Indonesian name is  'Petung'. Petung is a bamboo that is the strongest and largest of all bamboo.  This a the black variety of D asper. Indonesian name is Pegung Hitam.  Large culms are dark brown at the base and darken to black after a few nodes, it is the largest of the black bamboo species. This giant bamboo diameter as big as 7 inches in diameter. with heavy thick wall they are widely used in heavy construction and foundation of the bamboo building structure.

In terms of size and growth habit, Asper is more similar to Guadua angustifolia of Latin America. Both of them are the largest and strongest bamboo in their own geographical region.
