Homes with children need to take some special consideration as to the type of fences they install. There are some safety concerns surrounding children and fencing that need to be considered. Remember, children enjoy climbing fences, and they do not always understand what makes a fence safe enough for them to climb.

Chain link fences are one of the most popular types of fencing for containing children. Chain link fences are fine, but parents need to realize that their children are going to climb the fences. The little square links in a chain link fence make excellent foot holds for a child’s little feet and hands.

Wood fences are often thought of as safer for children. Wood fences can work well for homes with kids, but parents need to remember that wood can cause splinters. Children need to be taught not to climb a wood fence. Also, rusty nails left in old wooden fences are dangerous as children can get tetanus infections from rusted metal.

Vinyl fencing is an excellent choice for yards where children play. There are few things on a vinyl fence that pose a risk to a child, and the fences are durable and will withstand even rough play. A bamboo fence is another excellent choice for a yard with children.

Relatively inexpensive, bamboo fencing is made of green renewable material, it does not contain chemical, it is flex and actually strong than wood, so it will withstand the rough and tumble play of children.
